Hawaii, «huh WY ee or huh WAH ee,» is the only state in the United States that
does not lie on the mainland of North America. It is made up of islands near the
middle of the North Pacific Ocean. Honolulu, the capital and largest city, is
about 2,400 miles (3,860 kilometers) southwest of the U.S. mainland. Hawaii is
also the southernmost state. Oahu, the island on which Honolulu is located, is
as far south as central Mexico. Hawaii, the youngest state.

Mexico is the northernmost country of Latin America. It lies just south of the
United States. The Rio Grande forms about two-thirds of the boundary between
Mexico and the United States. Among all the countries of the Western Hemisphere,

Panama is a small country in Central America that has worldwide importance as a
transportation center. It covers the Isthmus of Panama, a narrow strip of land
that separates the Atlantic and Pacific oceans near the middle of the Western
Hemisphere. The Panama Canal cuts through the isthmus, connecting the two
oceans. Thousands of ships use the canal each year to pass from one ocean to the
other.
